Tay people celebrate Thanh Minh festival

TQO - The Thanh Minh (grave-visiting) festival, which falls on the third day of the third lunar month, is one of the most important festivals of the Tay people in Tuyen Quang Province.

Five colour sticky rice is an indispensable dish during Thanh Minh festival.

On this day, people prepare the offering trays and incense in order to visit grave to remember the credits of parents, ancestors and the dead.

The worshiping ceremony during Thanh Minh festival consists of two parts: the worship at home and the worship at the grave. The offerings depend on the descendants' circumstances, but usually include chicken, pork, fruit, votive papers, and five-colour sticky rice.

Normally, after practicing rituals in the family, all of members begin to go to the grave. From early in the morning of the opening day, people flock to the hillsides and mountain sides, where the graveyard and cemeteries are located, rooting out grass and cleaning up around the grave area. After that, they burn incense and put their offering trays on ancestor's grave.

After the visiting ritual, the family members gather together to enjoy the offerings and hold exchanges with other families.
