Tuyen Quang promotes sustainable development of fruit-growing regions

TQO - Tuyen Quang cultivates over 17.550 hectares of fruit trees, yielding more than 200.000 tons annually. The province focuses on key crops such as oranges and pomelos, along with advantageous fruits like bananas, longans, custard apples, and persimmons. To effectively tap into this potential and ensure sustainable development, the province has implemented a range of comprehensive measures aimed at improving both the quality and value of its fruit products.

Delegates from northern midland and mountainous provinces visited the Soi Ha pomelo orchard in Xuan Van commune (Yen Son), which exports its products to the UK market.

Districts of Ham Yen, Chiem Hoa, and Yen Son have been designated as concentrated citrus-growing zones. Among them, Xuan Van commune in Yen Son stands out with over 950 hectares of pomelo. Its Soi Ha pomelo has been granted geographical indication certification and nearly 8.000 fruits were exported to the UK in the 2024 harvest season. Additionally, Xuan Van seedless persimmon and Duong pomelo have met OCOP standards, affirming the quality of the province’s agricultural products.

Ham Yen is known as the “kingdom of Sanh oranges,” with over 7.200 hectares under cultivation, nearly 80% of which is dedicated to this signature variety. The product has not only received geographical indication certification but has also been awarded a 4-star OCOP rating, helping thousands of households improve their incomes.

Province-wide, more than 2.199 hectares of fruit trees are grown following recognized standards such as VietGAP and GlobalGAP. However, the sector continues to face challenges: local varieties still dominate, while new and imported cultivars remain limited. Many existing varieties have degenerated, affecting fruit quality and market competitiveness. Production remains fragmented and small-scale, and fruit markets are unstable, with fluctuating prices often causing farmers to suffer losses despite bumper crops.

In response, the province has directed efforts to establish key fruit-growing zones and stagger harvest periods to ensure productivity, quality, and food safety. It is also actively building agricultural brands, registering planting area codes, and promoting clean and organic farming practices.

At the same time, Tuyen Quang is rolling out a range of support policies to foster production. These include promoting value chain-based production models, adopting advanced irrigation systems, improving plant breeding techniques, supplementing pollination, and regulating flowering schedules for better crop timing.

Experts believe that with its natural advantages and well-aligned development strategy, Tuyen Quang is well-positioned to build high-quality fruit-growing areas, contributing to improved farmer livelihoods and the sustainable growth of its agricultural economy.
