Khen, a cultural value of the H’mong people in Tuyen Quang

TQO - H'mong people in Xuan Lap commune, Lam Binh District believe Khen (pan-pipe) performance is not only to release thoughts and feelings but also to show off their talent.

People who can both perform khen and produce this musical instrument will receive the admiration of villagers because making a khen requires a lot of sophisticated techniques. The musical instrument of the H'mong people is composed of two main parts: the body and the pipe. The body is made of wood and about 70 cm long, inside there is a copper reed to make sound. The pipe is a part that adjusts and directly produces sound, consisting of 6 bamboo tubes with different sizes and lengths. Each tube has a tone adjustment hole.

H'mong men learn to play the khen when they are small. They play the khen and dance to show off their strength, sensibility, and skill. They always perform khen during festivals and New Year celebrations.

Thao Seo Vang in Khuoi Trang Hamlet is one of the young excellent khen player in the locality. Vang said that the khen is musical instrument with a structure that is suitable for hunchback and the rotation and dance positions. The person who performs khen with shrugs, turns or rolls on the ground creates a very beautiful choreography.

In the coming time, the Commune People's Committee of Xuan Lap Commune will organise classes on H'mong khen performance in the locality and establish a Xuan Lap Khen club, contributing to preserving the cultural identity in the area as well as improving the spiritual life of the local people.
