In 2018, with the support of the district's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, a number of households in Hop Hoa Commune (Son Duong) converted nearly 10 hectares of inefficient agricultural land to plant solanum procumbens. After two years, the economic efficiency of this medicinal plant is 5-6 times higher than corn and cassava. Each year, solanum procumbens can be harvested 2 - 3 crops, each hectare yields is about 2 tonnes - 3 tonnes per crop, bringing in an income of more than VND80 million per hectare per crop.
Bui Van Hoang, Director of Hop Hoa Agro-Forestry Production and Processing Services Cooperative said that the cooperative was established in 2019 in association with the development and expansion of raw material areas for growing solanum procumbens. Up to now, the cooperative has 13 members and more than 40 households associated with growing solanum procumbens.
Currently, the cooperative has consumed solanum procumbens with the price of VND35,000 - VND40,000 per kg. In addition, the cooperative is producing solanum procumbens tea product with prices ranging from VND40,000 to VND70,000 per box.
Now, solanum procumbens trees are grown in 5 communes of Dong Tho, Quyet Thang, Son Nam, Hop Hoa and Thien Ke with more than 15 hectares, an increase of more than 5 hectares compared to the same period last year.
