In the past, the Thuy people lived by shifting cultivation locations across high mountain peaks, thus, the effectiveness of their cultivation faced many difficulties. However, thanks to the mobilization of local authorities, they have relocated to the foot of the mountains where they have learnt to plant rice and raise animals.
Their lives have since changed markedly. Households of Thuy people are working together as well as living in solidarity and harmony with the Pa Then, Dao and Tay communities in the locality. Currently, 100% of families have access to electricity and all children are receiving formal schooling.
Thuy people in Thuong Minh Hamlet, Hong Quang Commune, Lam Binh District grow clean vegetables to boost their incomes.
In addition, the Thuy ethnic minority people have complied with the State’s regulations on the appropriate ages for marriage. Children in particular now have the right to self-determination in their marriage choices. Unnecessary procedures involved in their weddings have also been cut down.
The majority of Thuy people marry those belonging to the Pa Then ethnic group. Nevertheless, in each Thuy person’s family, their native language is still spoken and traditional customs are still followed so that the generations to come will not forget their heritage.
Although the population of Thuy people is small, as mentioned they have their own language and unique cultural traditions. They have contributed greatly to cultural diversity in the Lam Binh District.
