The costume of the Dao shaman in Khuoi Xoan village, Hong Quang commune (Lam Binh).
A set of ceremonial costumes includes a tunic, hat, belt and trousers.
The hat is designed in the shape of a pyramid with black colour. It is about 20cm width and 30cm height. On both sides, there are two hat ears about 12cm length and 8 small cotton balls attached at the corners of the hat.
The most important part of a Dao Tien shaman’s outfit is the long-sleeve blouse, which covers over their trousers and is commonly made in black. The sleeves and collar are decorated with motifs such as herbs, flowers, stars and pine trees.
In particular, a Dao Tien shaman's costume is different from their normal outfit because there are 3 fabric straps about 150cm length and 20cm width with 3 different colours of white, black and red that are slung over the shoulders of the shaman.
The trousers are primarily designed in two large tubes with black colour.
For the Dao Tien people in Tuyen Quang Province, the shaman is an important person in their daily life, especially in ceremonies, such as weddings, New Year's Day, 'cap sac' ritual, etc. Through the shaman, people want to pray for prosperity, peace and happiness.
