In Lang Chau Hamlet, many people can distinguish someone's broom-making skills basing on looking at each broom. The broom must be rolled neatly, evenly while the color of the broom is green, elegant. That is what many broom makers in the hamlet always aim for and forge themselves to create satisfactory finished products for the market. Therefore, a broom in the craft villages only has a "lifetime" of about 3 months, but the broom in Lang Chau Hamlet is "feedback" by customers that the time to use is 5 months to 6 months. That creates its own brand for Lang Chau broom.
For the Dao people, grass broom making is not a livelihood but also a village soul because this traditional craft has existed for more than 100 years. Bang Thi Ngoan, a 80 year-old villager shared that, when she was born, local people knew to earn money from making grass broom. Households make brooms, people make brooms. As a result, girls and boys, about 7 years old - 8 years old were very proficient in bundling brooms.
“After harvesting grass flower, I hang them above the patio during 2 – 3 months, avoiding the sun and wind, so that the brooms keep the green color”, Ban Thi Mai, one of the fastest and most beautiful broom makers in the village shared.
Head of Lang Chau Hamlet Ly Van Tien said that Lang Chau has 215 households, many of them is out of poverty thanks to making grass brooms. In recent years, many young people have decided to stay in their homeland and develop their traditional jobs. To be on trend, young generation introduced craft villages on social networking sites to connect and promote their products.
Local people in Lang Chau hoped that, in the near future, the local authorities will establish a cooperative group in the supply of raw materials and consumption in order to promote product value, step by step forming a brand of 'Lang Chau brooms'.
