The ritual takes place 3 times a year. At each moment, the ritual has its own meaning. December 25th is the door closing ceremony of the village. This is the biggest ritual of the year and everyone must strictly observe some taboos. On this occasion, villagers and passengers are not allowed to bring anything out of the village. If in an emergency, a person has to bring his belongings out of the village, he urgently reports to the head of the village. The village headman then offer ceremony, burn incense and report the reason to the gods.
The Dao people of Dum village believe that the gods will bless and protect them.
December 25th is the time when people are celebrating the traditional Lunar New Year. The moment of transition between the old year and the new year is extremely sacred. The White Pants Dao people in Dum village believe that during this time, if anyone brings things out of the village, they will lose the whole village's fortune and bringing bad luck for people.
The door closing ceremony lasts until the 2nd day of the second lunar year of the next year. On this day, the villagers hold the door opening ceremony after more than a month closing door. At this time, local people continue working and producing.
Next one is the ceremony to pray for a bumper crop which is held on the 6th of the 6th lunar month. This time is the main crop of the year of the White Pants Dao people in Dum village. Therefore, local people pray for favorable weather, abundant crops and avoid risks such as floods, droughts, and pests.
The offerings for the ritual of praying to the village of the Dao are quite simple, including chicken, pig, white wine, rice, etc. These things are contributed by families, then gathered on a prestigious household in the community (village headman) to prepare the ceremony.
At the end of the ritual, people in the village have a meal together at the house of the village headman to bond with each other and tighten community feelings.
