The custom of erecting bamboo pole in the Tet holiday of the Tay people

TQO - The age-old tradition of erecting a bamboo pole, known as cay neu, to celebrate the Lunar New Year has been preserved by the Tay people in Tuyen Quang Province.

The Tay ethnic people believe that the erection of bamboo pole to ward off evil spirits during Tet holiday as well as bringing good luck and peace to their family in new year.

On the afternoon of the 30th of the twelfth lunar month, the breadwinner will build bamboo pole in front of the house. Then, the members of the family will hang national flag or red papers, 3 incense sticks and 1 “banh chung” (square glutinous rice cake) on the bamboo pole.

Accordingly, red papers and incense stick symbol for evil banishment while "banh chung" show the Tay people's wishes of their new year to be filled with success, happiness, and prosperity.
