There are currently more than 300 hectares of ‘Bat do’ and ‘Chinh’ bamboo shoots across the commune, concentrated in the hamlets of Na Mu, Na La, Phia Trang and Na Con.
After being harvested, bamboo shoots are preliminarily processed by washing, boiling, cutting and drying them, aiming to make safe and delicious dried shoots.
Growing bamboo for shoots has helped locals in Son Phu Commune (Na Hang District) improve their economy.
At the end of the bamboo shoot season, locals cut old bamboo trees and sell them to the Na Hang Base Paper Factory to be used as materials, or to the owners of construction projects to make scaffolding and formwork.
Na La Hamlet has the most bamboo shoot growers in Son Phu Commune. At present, all households in the hamlet are cultivating ‘Bat do’ bamboo to get bamboo shoots, with many of them having escaped poverty.
In 2019, five households in Na La lifted themselves out of poverty, thus driving down the number of poor households in the locality to 33. The average income of Na La locals has currently reached VND18 million per capita per annum.
Son Phu Commune is now advocating focusing on taking care of the existing bamboo shoot area to increase productivity. Currently, the commune has grown over 300 hectares of bamboo with an annual output of nearly 10,000 tonnes of bamboo shoots.
