Unique "watermills" of Tuyen Quang

TOQ - The Tay people in Tan An Commune (in Chiem Hoa District, Tuyen Quang Province) always compare the cọn, known as waterwheels, to a "mill" working diligently day and night to bring water to upland fields and to their homes. The creaking of the cọn combined with the murmurs of water create the ordinary sounds of the mountains.

Cọn, known as waterwheels, a beauty of the mountainous district of Chiem Hoa, Tuyen Quang.

Without fussing noises of machines and no wastage of fuel or electricity as pumps, cọn operate by water power but still ensure enough water to irrigate agricultural crops. Not only having an economic and scientific value, cọn are also imbued with traditional typical cultural values of the Tay community in Tuyen Quang.

Most people do not remember or do not know when the cọn was born, only knowing that they have seen cọn from when they were born. Each cọn is considered an architectural work carrying the soul of the Tay people.

To make a cọn, it is important to choose a solid area, adjacent to the edge of the field. The site is neither too deep, nor too far from the water intake, with relative stable flow.

In order to preserve the perpetual cycle of the cọn, the Tuyen Quang Provincial Culture, Sports and Tourism sector has developed a dossier to be submitted to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to recognise the cọn of the Tay people in the province as an intangible cultural heritage.

Each rotation of the cọn contains the exploration and concern as well as the desire to rise in life and affirm the bravery of the Tay people in their Tuyen Quang homeland.
