New rice ceremony of Tay people in Tuyen Quang Province

TQO - At the end of autumn, when the rice fields begin to turn yellow, the Tay people hold a new rice celebration, named the "kin khau mau" ceremony. This is a unique cultural entity handed down through many generations of Tay people.

In the Tay people’s culture, any family that has a "house ghost" or an incense burning bowl to worship their parents and grandparents must organise a "new rice" ceremony.

The day of the ceremony is selected and announced to the villagers by a reputable shaman in the area. On this day, all families in the locality will hold the "kin khau mau" celebration.

Each family will cut the most beautiful rice flowers from their fields and bring them home. After that, they are put into a bowl of boiled water and placed on the ancestor's altar to pray for a good harvest.

During the celebration, the Tay people must not forget to put the green rice flake dish wrapped in phrynium leaves in order to communicate with the ancestors about a good harvest.
