One of the most unique features of the Red Dao women can be seen through their traditional costume, including their headwear, scarf, blouse, trousers, bodice and belt. Using black as a background colour, Red Dao people’s clothes feature four main colours including red, yellow, blue and white. The most important part of a Red Dao women's outfit is a long dress, which is often in black or indigo colour.
While the costumes of Red Dao women are quite sophisticated, the men simply wear a head-scarf, short shirt, and long trousers. 
In an effort to preserve the charm of their traditional costumes, Red Dao women have actively handed down the tailoring and embroidery techniques to younger generations, particularly girls so that when the girls grow up, they can be skilled in making a completed set of traditional clothes for themselves and their family members.
Red Dao people often dressed in their most beautiful and colourful outfits on their traditional festivals and weddings or on the occasion of welcoming special guests to their houses.
