Ham Yen makes breakthrough in sugarcane farming

TQO - Ham Yen District (Tuyen Quang Province) has enjoyed high productivity of up to 100 tonnes per ha in this year’s sugarcane crop. This breakthrough is stirring high expectations among local sugarcane growers hoping to replicate such successful farming models.

Many sugarcane farming households in Binh Xa Commune have enjoyed a high yield up to 100 tonnes per ha. However, the average figure for the whole commune stands at only 75 tonnes per ha. In order to improve productivity in the next crop, the commune has cooperated with the district’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and Son Duong Sugar and Sugarcane Joint Stock Company to survey and select suitable cultivating areas and households for implementing intensive farming models aimed at high productivity.

Thai Hoa commune has more than 74 ha of sugarcane. In 2020, the commune is deploying a new high-yielding cultivating model on a total area of 3 ha. Currently, registered households have signed contracts with Son Duong Sugar and Sugarcane JSC to deploy the new farming model.

The district has 450 ha of sugarcane, but the average productivity in recent years has only reached 60 tonnes a ha. Locales in the district have focused on expanding the cultivation areas to increase production, but the application of scientific and technical advances is still limited. The district has developed a high-intensive sugarcane plantation model, which is being implemented in the three communes of Binh Xa, Thai Hoa and Thai Son on a total area of 10 ha. The sugarcane varieties selected for the project are QT, K33, 22K, which were used in pilot farming during the previous season and which achieved positive results. This is a premise for Ham Yen to replicate in their sugarcane fields, hoping to reach a productivity level of 100 tonnes per ha.
