Forest plantations in accordance with FSC standards in Chiem Hoa Ditrict

TQO - In recent years, Chiem Hoa District has encouraged local people to grow forests meeting the international standards of the Forestry Steward Council (FSC), thus opening up a new direction in developing the forest-based economy in the locality.

Chiem Hoa district possesses 6,480.7 hectares of forest that were granted certificates by the FSC. Of which, more than 5,514 hectares of forest belonging to Chiem Hoa Forestry Company Limited were granted the FSC certificate in 2016, and the remaining 966,7 hectares of forest planted by local people in Tan My and Hung My communes were certified in 2018.

Since receiving the FSC certificates, the selling price of processed wood has increased by about 20%, equivalent to VND160,000 per square metre, as compared to the price without certification.

Tan My Commune has 5,200 hectares of forestry with an annual planted and exploited forest area of 100 hectares. In 2018, Woodsland Joint Stock Company in collaboration with local forest rangers implemented the FSC International Forest Certification Programme. Thanks to communication and mobilisation efforts, 123 households have since participated in the FSC forestation project, covering a total area of over 770 hectares.

The meeting of international standards has eliminated spontaneous afforestation, which happens in the absence of science and technology. Forest-based products which are made with good quality, traceable origin and high selling prices have contributed to fulfilling the forestry economic development goals of Chiem Hoa District.
