TQO - Hoang Van Phung is a person with great merits in preserving the Khen (panpipe) tunes in Chuong Hamlet, Hung Loi Commune, Yen Son District.

Hoang Van Phung in Chuong Hamlet, Hung Loi Commune, Yen Son District plays Khen.

When he was young, he was passionate about playing Khen.

He said that, the H'mong Khen consists of 2 main parts: the gourd and the pipe, in addition to the belt and the reed. Each part has a different function. The panpine gourd plays the role of sound resonance and balancing the pressure between the pipes. The pipes play the role of regulating and directly emitting the sound of the trumpet.

For many generations, the sound of the Khen has been the link connecting the community and is a part of the culture of the H'mong people.

Phung's passion for Khen also inspires the young people in the locality. Directly taught by Phung, many young people now can play and dance the basic Khen.

Currently, Chuong Hamlet has a Khen performance team on holidays that serve local people and tourists.
