Dao O Gang subgroup in Minh Loi Hamlet

TQO - Dao O Gang, a subgroup of the Dao ethnic group, live mainly in Minh Loi Hamlet, Trung Minh Commune, Yen Son District. Currently, Dao O Gang people live in 86 out of 92 households in the hamlet.

“Cap Sac” is considered the most sacred and important ritual in the lives of Dao O Gang people in Minh Loi. Those who are eligible to be granted with “Cap Sac” must be married men aged 18 and over.

A ‘Cap Sac’ ritual with seven lamps can be conducted for one or several men at once. ‘Cap Sac’ rituals and ‘Pao Dung’ folk singing have a strong attachment to the spiritual life of Dao ethnic people.

Dao O Gang subgroup in Minh Loi Hamlet celebrate three important “Tet” festivals every year, including the lunar New Year, when offerings are ‘Day’ (round) cake; the full-moon festival on the seventh lunar month, when the offerings are ‘Chung’ (square) cake; and the grave-visiting festival in March, during which 12 ‘Day’ (round) cakes are indispensable offerings.

Dao O Gang ethnic people today still communicate in their own language in daily life. Dao O gang women in Minh Loi continue to make embroideries manually by themselves to make male and female clothes. During the holidays, the Dao O Gang people certainly dress in their most beautiful outfits.

Thanks to the State and local authorities’ care, Dao O Gang people in Minh Loi recently made a great effort in production, forest growing, husbandry, and wet-rice and corn cultivation. To date, the hamlet contains only 12 poor households in total.

Along with promoting economic development, the Dao O Gang ethnic people in Minh Loi have always promoted solidarity, preserved and uphold their cultural identities, thus contributing to enriching the cultural identity of ethnic groups in the district.
