Tuyen Quang eyes green agriculture

TQO - The project "Propaganda and mobilization of farmers to treat waste in Vietnam, contributing to the international community's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions" has been raising awareness and changing the behavior of farmers in Tuyen Quang province in production, towards green, environmentally friendly agriculture.

The project "Propaganda and mobilization of farmers to treat waste in Vietnam, contributing to the international community's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions" is being implemented by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Union in 15 provinces and cities nationwide. In Tuyen Quang, the project has been implemented by the Provincial Farmers' Union since 2022 in 9 communes in 3 districts of Yen Son, Chiem Hoa and Tuyen Quang City.

The project focuses on propagating, mobilizing, and guiding farmer members to apply 5 technical solutions for environmentally friendly organic waste treatment: fermenting crop by-products for animal feed, composting organic fertilizer from crop by-products in the field, raising chickens on thick biological bedding, raising calcium worms, and raising earthworms. Thereby, contributing to raising awareness of members and farmers about environmental protection, responding to climate change, and gradually changing behavior in classifying and treating waste in an environmentally friendly way.

According to the assessment of the Project Management Board - Farmers' Association of Tuyen Quang province, when farmers apply the project's techniques, their profits increase by an average of 25 - 30%; input costs such as animal feed, fertilizers, disease prevention and treatment drugs, and plant protection drugs decrease by about 32%; productivity growth of livestock and crops increases by about 25 - 30%, etc.

After more than 2 years of implementation, the Project has organized 2 training courses for key lecturers and farmer members in localities participating in the Project; 46 training courses for nearly 1,190 farmer members; organized 6 field trips to study organic waste collection and treatment models both inside and outside the province.

Implementing the Project, Farmers' Associations at all levels have supported the construction of nearly 1,000 models applying environmentally friendly waste treatment techniques. From the initially built models, up to now, more than 4,000 models have been replicated in the province. One of the highlights of the project is the positive impact on farmers' thinking, awareness and actions on environmental protection. From being unfamiliar with concepts and techniques, it has now become a need to treat waste and waste in the production process and life.

The application of environmentally friendly waste treatment techniques has helped households reduce input costs in agricultural production. Sustainable circular agricultural models have been gradually formed. At the same time, through project activities, awareness of people and farmers on environmental protection, climate change response, maintenance and replication of environmental protection models, and participation in new rural construction has been gradually raised.
