Mr. Do Van Hung in Minh Phu 1 Hamlet, Yen Phu Commune, Ham Yen District introducing his family's red flesh dragon fruit garden.
Red-flesh dragon fruit in Yen Phu is grown on desert land, thus fruit is not as big as dragon fruit in southern areas, but it is fragrant, tasty, and sweet. Moreover, farmers in the locality plant dragon fruit following VietGAP standards, so crowds flock to Yen Phu to buy red-flesh dragon fruit every years.
Yen Phu Commune has more than 50 hectares of dragon fruits that are being harvested, mostly in hamlets of Minh Phu 1, 1A Thong Nhat, Minh Phu 3 and Km 61. Now, Yen Phu is considered as the "capital" of red-flesh dragon fruit.
Local people grow dragon fruit according to safe process, using decayed organic fertilizer and biological pesticides instead chemical fertilizer. Therefore, the environment is not polluted while the selling price of red-flesh dragon fruit is higher, meeting the market requirements.
Thanks to the economic efficiency of red-flesh dragon fruit, the commune's revenue from dragon fruit is about VND15 billion per year, helping hundreds of households in the locality improve their living standards.
The People's Committee of Yen Phu Commune has identified that red-flesh dragon fruit as a key crop and included this fruit in the "One commune, one product" programme. In the coming time, the commune will organise training courses to instruct growers the ways to plant and care for dragon fruits under VietGAP standards and organic production, contributing to raising farmers' incomes. At the same time, the local authorities will encourage households to develop concentrated dragon fruit farming areas in order to create an experiential tourism model in association with agricultural production, attracting more tourists to visit Tien Cave and experience the dragon fruit gardens.
