Wood burning stoves of the Tay people in Tuyen Quang Province

TQO - In the traditional stilt house of the Tay people, the wood burning stove holds an important position. Therefore, the kitchen is usually placed in the innermost part of the main room, behind the ancestor's altar.

Almost every family's activity of the Tay people centres around the kitchen.

Normally, the Tay people have a new kitchen when building a new house. According to the Tay traditional custom, when the house is completed, people bring the Fire God into the house first. They always believe that this god will keep the fire never extinguished and bring luck and happiness to their home.

The person who lit the fire is very important. The homeowner invites some reputable elderly in the village to light the kitchen and bless. After that, the family's members will move into the new house and keep the fire in the new kitchen burning continuously during three day and night.

For the Tay people, the fire is a symbol for the man in the family while the woman keeps the kitchen always warm.
