Exploring Tay people’s manual stone mill in Tuyen Quang Province

TQO - The manual stone mill is a familiar item in the daily life of the Tay ethnic group in Tuyen Quang Province, holding deep spiritual significance in their lives.

The structure of the stone mill is quite simple, including two stone blocks which are made of monolithic stone. The surface of the mill is divided by deep grooves with a wooden compact crank of about 70 cm.

The manual stone mill is used daily by the Tay people in Dong Da Hamlet, Thuong Nong Commune, Na Hang District.

Normally, the manual stone mill is made by the man who is the breadwinner of the family and other men from the village. They spend one day making it. The Tay people often put the mill under their stilt house, on the right side of the house, aiming to hope for a harmonious and comfortable life.

Nowadays there are electric mills, however, the Tay people still use the manual stone mills to make various kinds of cakes such as: “banh gai” (glutinous rice cake blackened in a concoction of edible leaves), “banh day” (round sticky rice cake), and “banh troi” (floating cake) during the Lunar New Year period, the Full Moon Day of the Lunar Seventh Month and other festivals.

The manual stone mill has long been a symbol of solidarity, togetherness as well as the cultural beauty of the Tay ethnic group in Tuyen Quang province.
