Ban Tat promotes hunger eradication and poverty reduction thanks to growing bamboo

TQO - From an indigenous tree that grows wildly in the forest, trinh bamboo has been planted to the gardens and hills by the Dao ethnic people in Ban Tat Hamlet, Tri Phu Commune, Chiem Hoa District. Currently, bamboo not only contributes to cover the barren land and hills, but also becomes a key crop with high economic efficiency for the locals.

The biggest advantage of this kind of bamboo compared to other crops is that local people can harvest bamboo shoots, stems and leaves. On average, each households in the hamlet collect more than 10 tonnes of fresh bamboo shoots each crop.

In addition, local people in Ban Tat Hamlet have also developed the craft of making dried bamboo shoots to increase their incomes, with the selling price of VND140 - VND160,000 VND per kg. The craft of making dried bamboo shoots starts at the end of the 5th lunar month and lasts about 4 months. After each crop, many households earn more than VND100 million.

Thanks to growing trinh bamboo, people in the locality have reduced poverty and improved their live standards. On average, there are 3 - 5 households in Ban Tat Hamlet escaping poverty every year. Currently, there are only 5 poor households in the hamlet.

Along with black bean tea bags, Ban Tat dried bamboo shoots have been selected as a high quality product by the commune to build a brand under the OCOP programme.
