Nung women in Bum Ken village, Hung Loi commune (Yen Son) brew indigo vats.
Mrs. Trang Gia Min in Bum Ken village shared: After being picked, the indigo leaves will be cleaned and put in a barrel soaked in spring water. Then comes the step of stirring the indigo leaves to dissolve in water to create a shimmering green color, then wait for the starch to settle and then take it out. The indigo starch continues to be mixed with lime powder, wood ash and alcohol, this mixture is only known to the Nung people because it will determine the color of the fabric as well as the durability of the dye.
The Nung people here dye fabric not for wholesale but mainly to sew traditional costumes of the ethnic group. There are not many people who still know how to indigo and dye fabric. It is known that people are actively teaching the younger generation to preserve good traditions.
