Ms. Ban Thi Giau's family is one of the households with a comfortable life in Thai Khao. Thanks to over 15 hectares of acacia forest, her family was able to build a concrete-pillar stilt house, buy a motorbike and other furniture for life.
Pointing to the acacia forest that is more than a year old and growing well, Ms. Giau said: "That is more than 5 hectares of forest planted in 2023, the seed source is supported by the province so it is 100% viable. Now, people who plant forests only need to register with forest rangers to receive support for quality seeds and guidance on proper planting techniques."
Taking us to visit his family's acacia forest, Mr. Dang Van Thai shared that at first, his family only planted 2.5 hectares of acacia. After the first harvest, he and his wife earned more than VND200 million. Realizing that acacia planting does not require high techniques, the investment cost is low and especially the output is stable, so far the family has invested in rotating planting of 17 hectares of acacia. Each year, Mr. Thai's family exploits 2-3 hectares, with the current selling price bringing a stable income of about VND200 million per cycle.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phien, Head of Yen Huong Forest Protection Station (in charge of Yen Lam commune, Yen Phu) under Ham Yen District Forest Protection Department, said that Thai Khao has over 2,800 hectares of forest, of which 2,200 hectares are production forests. Income from the forest has fundamentally changed the lives of 82 Dao and Mong households here. Therefore, forest rangers always stick to the area, grasp each forest area of each household to guide people to plant, care for and protect the planted forests.
Head of Thai Khao village Ly Van Thong affirmed: “For the Dao and Mong people in Thai Khao, it is truly a “golden forest”. Thanks to the forest economy, people's lives are constantly improving. Currently, the average income per capita of Thai Khao reaches VND48 million per person per year, an increase of more than VND20 million compared to 2020.
