"Khai buon" is the first ritual in the human life cycle, so it is carefully prepared by the Tay people in Tuyen Quang. Accordingly, on the full month of the children's day, every Tay family invites "Thay Tao" (shaman) to celebrate and name the baby. The shaman is a highly reputable person among ethnic minorities and gain knowledge of local culture, customs and habit.
"Thay Tao" (shaman) plays an important role in the "khai buon" ritual of the Tay ethnic people in Tuyen Quang Province.
The ritual is organised after the shaman named the baby. This nickname is based on the day, month, year, and time that the child were born with the wishes of bringing luck and happiness for the baby. It is only used during ancestor worship rituals whereas the baby's birth name is given by the child's family members and is used in daily life.
During the ceremony, the maternal grandmother hold and put the baby in the cradle and sing lullaby melodies. Next, a reputable and intelligent person brings some books and carries the child on his back to go out with with the hope that the baby will go to school and study well like this person. At the same time, the shaman prepares offerings and burns incense to perform the ritual, then gives lucky charms for children in the family.

"Khai buon" ritual is a long-standing custom of the Tay ethnic group in Tuyen Quang and it has been passed down through generations. This is not only a full-month ceremony, but also a beautiful humane value, showing the responsibility of the family in raising and taking care children.
