Tuyen Quang is the dong leaf granary of the North.
People who collect wild dong leaves usually work in groups, going deep into the old forests to get a batch of beautiful dong leaves. They walk very far carrying dong leaves and gather at places where motorbikes can carry them down to the village.
Ms. Hoang Thi Hue, Tay ethnic, Lang Chang village, Hoa Phu commune (Chiem Hoa) shared: "We always remind each other to protect the forest. Each dong tree plays an important role in maintaining the ecosystem, preserving the soil and water. If we don't know how to protect it, the forest will be lost, and without the forest, there will be no dong leaves. So we have to harvest properly, ensuring that the dong trees will grow and develop well next year".
According to people in Hoa Phu commune, collecting dong leaves is a job that requires health, endurance, dexterity and sophistication.
Dong leaves have begun to appear for sale in markets across the province.
With an average price of about VND1,000 per leaf, people who collect dong leaves can earn an average of VND300,000 per day.
On the days before Tet, at the provincial wholesale market and the communal markets, people sell dong leaves everywhere. In families, the process of washing dong leaves and preparing ingredients to wrap cakes also makes the Tet atmosphere more bustling and exciting.
