Smart farming

TQO - With innovative farming methods, farmers in Yen Son district not only change the crop structure appropriately but also apply advanced science and technology to production to increase output, creating better quality products.

The 2,000-tree four-season lemon garden of Ms. Tran Thu Hanh's family, Son Thuy village, Yen Thuan commune (Ham Yen) applies advanced irrigation.

With a different approach, the 7-hectare green-skinned grapefruit garden of Mr. Pham Van Yen, Do Thuong 6 village, Xuan Van commune (Yen Son) is lush, generating a value of over a billion VND per year, which has impressed many people.

The secret shared by Mr. Yen: "For years, I have tried every way to develop the grapefruit garden in an organic direction. One of the decisive factors is finding a way to make organic fertilizer myself".

The ingredients in organic fertilizer include chicken bones, fresh cow's milk, molasses, soybeans, and composted microorganisms, creating a mixed organic fertilizer with enough nutrients needed for plants.

After 3 years of applying homemade organic fertilizer, Mr. Yen's grapefruit garden has made a clear difference. The grapefruit leaves are darker green, the trees are more vigorous and produce larger fruits than before. On average, a green-skinned grapefruit in Mr. Yen's garden weighs 1.8 kg, many fruits weigh 2.2 - 2.4 kg, reaching grade A. With a selling price of 23 thousand VND/kg, a fruit costs about 45 - 50 thousand VND.

More than 2,000 four-season lemon trees on the low hills of Ms. Tran Thu Hanh's family, Son Thuy village, Yen Thuan commune (Ham Yen) are grown and cared for organically and using an advanced irrigation system (drip irrigation) with beautiful fruit and good trees, bringing the family a daily income of millions of dong.

Ms. Hanh shared: The decisive factor for the quality and appearance of lemons is having enough water. Therefore, the family has invested in an advanced irrigation system worth over 500 million VND, including well drilling and an irrigation pipe system. Currently, the family waters 3 times/day if the weather is continuously sunny. Thanks to enough water, the fruit set rate reaches 95%.

It is expected that in 2024, the family's lemon garden will harvest about 40 - 45 tons of fruit, with an average selling price of 20 - 27 thousand VND/kg, earning about 1 billion VND".

Each successful farmer has his own way of doing things, but what they have in common is their diligence in learning and not giving up in the face of difficulties and challenges. From their productive labor, they have developed their creativity to agricultural production.
