The allure of the Northernmost journey
The convoy’s cars slowly ascended the Heaven’s Gate Pass in Quan Ba Commune, revealing a breathtaking panorama of valleys and mountains stretching into the distance. From above, villages clustered together like matchboxes scattered across the vast landscape. At each bend, groups of travelers stopped to take photos and enjoy the view, creating a lively atmosphere along the winding mountain road.

For many visitors, conquering the mountain routes of Tuyen Quang is both a challenge and a fascination. The roads meander along rocky cliffs and across valleys, giving travelers the sensation of walking among the clouds. Despite occasional delays as workers clear rockfalls or repair the road, the ruggedness only adds to the adventure. At scenic viewpoints, locals have opened rest stops where travelers can park, enjoy roasted corn, sweet potatoes, or eggs - both supporting local livelihoods and enlivening the journey.
Tham Ma Pass, known for its serpentine shape resembling a climbing python, has become a favorite check-in spot for both Vietnamese and foreign tourists. The sight of H’Mong children carrying wildflowers, elderly men playing the khen flute, and women embroidering by small souvenir stalls adds a distinctly highland charm. British visitor David Back shared that his trip from Hanoi to Tuyen Quang far exceeded expectations, calling it a “million-star journey” – free, open, and full of wonder.
Beyond Tham Ma, travelers continue through Sung La, Dong Van, Lung Cu, and Lo Lo Chai, where earthen-walled houses with yin-yang tile roofs and blooming buckwheat flowers paint a picture of timeless beauty. The most striking stop is Ma Pi Leng – the majestic “Horse Saddle” Pass – where visitors can admire the Nho Que River winding through the Tu San Gorge like a ribbon of jade.
In the first ten months of 2025, Tuyen Quang welcomed over 3.2 million visitors. This November, the Buckwheat Flower Festival will once again be the highlight of the season, promising to attract crowds eager to explore the wild, vibrant beauty of Vietnam’s northernmost frontier.
