Unicorn-lion-dragon dance: A distinctive traditional sport

Beneath the graceful movements of the unicorn-lion-dragon heads lies strength, skill and a martial spirit nurtured through traditional martial arts. In Tuyen Quang, unicorn-lion-dragon dancing is gradually moving beyond the realm of folk performance to become a distinctive traditional sport, attracting growing numbers of young people.

In Vietnamese cultural life, the unicorn-lion-dragon are symbols associated with aspirations for peace, good fortune, bountiful harvests and family happiness. In Tuyen Quang, the art form has been blended with local cultural traditions, creating distinctive performances at festivals, particularly the Tuyen Quang Thanh Tuyen Festival.

At March 26 Square, the Duong Canh Ky Unicorn-lion-dragon Arts Troupe from Ha Giang 2 Ward regularly delivers vibrant performances. The beats of drums, cymbals and gongs combine to accompany the powerful yet graceful movements of the mythical creatures. Notably, most of the troupe's performers are young people aged between 12 and 17. Established in 2010 with more than 20 members, the troupe has helped bring unicorn-lion-dragon dancing to communities across the province.

Beyond creating a festive atmosphere, unicorn-lion-dragon dancing also serves as a means of bringing communities together. During festivals, the troupes parade through streets and visit households to offer blessings and convey wishes for a peaceful year, abundant harvests and a prosperous life. Over time, the art form has maintained its vitality thanks to the cultural beliefs, traditions and values passed down through generations.

Rooted in folk art, unicorn-lion-dragon dancing has become increasingly closely associated with traditional martial arts. Performers need physical strength, flexibility, balance, precise techniques and a strong sense of coordination. Complex movements require months, and sometimes years, of dedicated training.

Many martial arts schools and clubs in Tuyen Quang have combined martial arts training with unicorn-lion-dragon dancing, creating an environment where young people can improve their physical fitness, discipline and teamwork. Behind every impressive performance lies rigorous training, as well as a combination of martial arts, folk dance and performance techniques.

According to the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, unicorn-lion-dragon dancing is not only a form of folk culture that needs to be preserved but also has strong potential to become a distinctive tourism product. The sector will continue supporting clubs in developing more professional training and performance programs, gradually making unicorn-lion-dragon dancing a highlight of festivals and cultural events while linking the preservation of traditional values with tourism development.
