Grains of solidarity in Dong Trang village
In the mountainous and still-challenging area of Hung Loi commune, Dong Trang village has sustained a deeply humane initiative for nearly two decades: a community rice relief fund. Unlocked and without guards, this “granary of goodwill” has never run dry, nourished by voluntary contributions and strong communal bonds.

Dong Trang is home to 161 households with 699 residents, all from ethnic minority groups, with the Mong accounting for over 40%. In the early years of settlement, food shortages were common, especially during the lean season between harvests. In response, in November 2007, 40 households came together to establish the rice relief fund, each voluntarily contributing one sack of paddy per harvest.
Over time, the fund has grown into a reliable support system for families in need. Beyond providing assistance during food shortages, it also offers help during major family events such as weddings and funerals, reinforcing community solidarity. Local residents emphasize that the greatest value lies not in the quantity of rice distributed, but in the enduring spirit of mutual support.
To date, the fund has distributed between 150 and 250 tons of rice to villagers and neighboring communities. All activities are conducted transparently and on a voluntary basis, earning widespread trust among residents.
The spirit of unity in Dong Trang extends beyond the rice fund. During the construction of the Ho Chi Minh Trail section from Cho Chu to Nga Ba Trung Son, nine households voluntarily contributed more than 2.5 hectares of land for site clearance. In a housing support program, 15 households received assistance to build new homes, with villagers contributing over 450 labor days.
Thanks to these collective efforts, living conditions have steadily improved, and poverty has gradually declined. The rice relief fund not only addresses immediate needs but also strengthens community cohesion, forming a foundation for sustainable poverty reduction.
Today, as the village continues to transform, contributions of rice persist after each harvest, standing as a powerful symbol of compassion and unity in this highland community.
