Supporting the transition to green transportation
As air pollution from transportation grows increasingly urgent, accelerating the green transition, especially in the transport sector, has become both essential and pressing.

To address this issue, the Government Office has issued a notice conveying Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha’s instructions on developing public transportation systems and supporting citizens in adopting public and green transport.
Accordingly, the Deputy Prime Minister has requested the development of a roadmap for a modern, synchronized public transport system; the proposal of breakthrough mechanisms and policies to attract private investment; and support measures to encourage the use of public and green transport. The roadmap must specify tasks and responsibilities for each central and local agency, and be publicized early along with practical, feasible support policies to ensure public and business compliance.
Currently, road transport accounts for the largest share of the transport market, far surpassing rail and waterway transport. Experts point out that a strong restructuring of transport market shares is needed to reduce dependence on road transport and move toward sustainable development. Transitioning from fossil-fuel vehicles to green-energy vehicles plays a critical role in reducing carbon and methane emissions.
Specialists emphasize that the green transport strategy includes multiple tasks and solutions, beginning with the completion of a legal and institutional framework and the development of criteria and standards to assess green transport systems. Alongside restructuring transport market shares, Vietnam must adopt plans to transition both vehicles and transport infrastructure toward greener models, combining green infrastructure with green vehicles, while also accelerating digital transformation, smart transport applications and green logistics, all of which are inevitable global trends.
Only with unified commitment from the Government, businesses and citizens can this transition roadmap be implemented transparently, feasibly and sustainably, paving the way for a greener transport future and contributing to national emission-reduction goals.
