Tet of the Hmong people in the nation’s Northernmost Region

In the early days of the new year, as spring arrives, Hmong communities in Tuyen Quang gather together to exchange New Year wishes of good health, happiness and good fortune.

In the nation’s northernmost region, the Hmong ethnic group makes up the majority population, residing in many communes across Tuyen Quang Province.

For the Hmong people, Tet is an especially important occasion - a time for them to fulfill their duties to their clan, family members, ancestors and other deities they venerate.

The khen dance has long been a distinctive cultural feature of Hmong young men and women during Tet celebrations.

Over the years, local people have preserved many rich traditional cultural traits, from culinary customs and traditional attire to housing styles, rituals and festivals.

Though simple and modest, this remains a distinctive Tet celebration rooted in the traditions of the Hmong people in the country’s northernmost region.
