Survey for the implementation of a large-timber plantation improvement project
On January 24, a working delegation comprising experts from IKEA Group (Sweden), the Forestry Institute (Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry), Tan Trao University, and Woodsland Tuyen Quang Joint Stock Company conducted a field survey to implement a project aimed at improving large-timber forest plantations in the province.

According to expert assessments, Tuyen Quang is currently the country’s leading locality in forestry-based economic development, with a total plantation forest area of approximately 232,000 hectares. Of this, more than 96,500 hectares have been granted Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) sustainable forest management certification. Annual timber harvesting output reaches around 1.4 million cubic meters. Despite its great potential, in reality, most of the existing forest area consists of small-diameter timber, resulting in economic value that is not yet commensurate.
At the working session, scientists emphasized that in order to increase income value per unit area, organizations, enterprises, and forest households need to change their production mindset, focusing on improving and converting from small-timber forests to large-timber forests. At present, IKEA Group has coordinated with Woodsland Joint Stock Company to build a demonstration forest plantation model in Trung Son Commune.

This serves as a practical site for forest owners to visit and learn, enabling them to access advanced technical processes. After the survey, the involved parties committed to accompanying local people through activities including: providing in-depth technical support on sustainable forest cultivation; supplying high-quality forestry seedlings; and connecting value chains for forest owners wishing to participate in the project.
The implementation of the project helps enhance economic value for forest owners and the forestry sector, while also contributing to environmental protection and moving toward sustainable development.
