From early setbacks to building a thriving farm business, Luong Van Nam, a young Tay ethnic entrepreneur from Tung Ba Commune, has successfully developed a large-scale black-boned chicken farming model, earning nearly VND 1 billion annually while creating a new economic direction for local people.

Born in 1999, Nam decided while still in high school that he would build his future in his mountainous hometown. In his final school year, he invested in 500 chicks and built his first chicken coop. However, due to limited experience and poor disease prevention knowledge, the flock was quickly hit by disease, wiping out nearly all of his savings.

Refusing to give up, Nam moved to Ba Vi (Hanoi) after graduating from high school and worked at a large poultry farm to gain practical experience. During his time there, he learned professional farming techniques, including breed selection, feed preparation, temperature control and vaccination schedules.

In late 2019, Nam returned to Tung Ba and borrowed additional capital to restart his business, this time focusing on black-boned chickens, a high-value local specialty breed well suited to mountainous conditions. He sourced quality chicks from the National Institute of Animal Husbandry and gradually applied biosecure farming methods, including automatic watering systems, biological waste treatment and strict vaccination procedures.

Thanks to persistence and scientific farming practices, his model steadily expanded. Nam now operates two farms covering around 2 hectares in Khuon Lang and Hong Minh villages. Each farming cycle raises between 4,000 and 6,000 chickens, with three cycles maintained annually. In 2025, he is expected to sell around 30,000 chickens, equivalent to nearly 70 tons of commercial poultry, generating close to VND 1 billion in annual profit after expenses.

Beyond developing his own business, Nam has also partnered with 15 local households by supplying chicks, providing technical guidance and helping connect farmers with buyers. The model has contributed to the formation of a concentrated black chicken farming area in Tung Ba Commune.

In 2023, his project won First Prize at the “Startup Ideas” competition organized by the former Ha Giang Provincial Youth Union and has since become a model for young entrepreneurs in the region.
