Every Sunday morning, Meo Vac market bursts into life like a festive day, attracting ethnic H'mong, Dao, Lo Lo, Giay communities and visitors. From dawn, groups of people make their way along winding trails, crossing steep mountain passes to bring forest produce, livestock, and poultry for trade.

More than just a marketplace, the fair is a cultural gathering point. Amid vibrant traditional costumes and cheerful chatter, each person brings with them a story of daily life. Giang A Pu, from Son Vi commune, carefully carries two H’mong roosters under his arm to sell for rice and salt. Vu Mi Ho, from Dong Van commune, sets out at 2 a.m., leading his buffalo for hours to reach the market in time, hoping to earn enough to buy essentials and crop seeds.

Products at the market include chickens, pigs, cattle, bamboo shoots, vegetables, and handicrafts. The Meo Vac cattle market is one of the largest in the region, with hundreds of cattle traded each week, creating a bustling and lively atmosphere. Beyond commerce, people gather to enjoy local delicacies such as thang co, men men, black chicken pho, offal pho, sip corn wine, and catch up with friends and relatives.

Visitors not only explore and take photos but also immerse themselves in the unique local culture. Hoang Thanh Hung, from Tay Ninh province, expressed his delight at seeing traditional costumes, hearing cheerful conversations, and tasting rustic yet unforgettable dishes. He noted that the flavors stand out not because they are refined like in restaurants, but because they carry the warmth and sincerity of the people, made entirely from fresh mountain ingredients by skillful local hands.

As the sun climbs high, the market slowly winds down. The sounds of bargaining, the clatter of hooves, and the vivid colors fade into the peaceful mountain landscape. For highland people, Meo Vac market is not merely a trading place. It is a space that preserves traditional values, fosters community bonds, and showcases the unique cultural beauty of Vietnam’s northernmost frontier.
